How can I backup my Hyper-V virtual machine(s)?

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s),

  1. Login to the IDrive application and click the 'Server Backup' tab.
  2. In the Hyper-V Backup section, click 'Backup'.
  1. Select the 'Local Backup + Cloud Backup' or the 'Local Backup Only' radio button.

    Note: Once local backup is initiated, '.ServerBackup' folder is auto created.

  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list and specify a temporary path for the local backup.
  3. Click 'Schedule Now'.
  1. The 'Schedule backup' screen is displayed where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

Does IDrive support incremental backups for Hyper-V virtual machines?

Yes, for Hyper-V configuration version 8.0 or later, IDrive supports incremental backups after the initial full backup. This ensures optimal use of Internet bandwidth and storage space.

Can I backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, you can backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network mapped drive or NAS drive. While choosing a local backup path, select the network mapped drive / NAS drive and provide the necessary authentication.

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s) to a network mapped / NAS drive,

  1. Log in to the IDrive application and click the 'Server Backup' tab.
  2. In the Hyper-V Backup section, click 'Backup'.

  1. Select the 'Local Backup + Cloud Backup' or the 'Local Backup Only' radio button.
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list.
  3. Select the network mapped drive / NAS drive as the location for creating the disk image and click 'Schedule Now'.
  1. Enter your username and password to authenticate network mapped drive / NAS drive and click 'Authenticate'.
  1. The Schedule backup screen appears where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

What are the system requirements for IDrive Hyper-V Backup?

The system requirements for IDrive Hyper-V Backup are,

  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
  • Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Sufficient hard disk space to store the virtual machine files for temporary backup and restore

Do I need to turn off or shutdown the Virtual machine(s) in Hyper-V manager to take a backup?

No. You do not have to shut down your active virtual machine(s) to perform a backup. IDrive enables you to backup virtual machine(s) in their Running state.

How secure is the data transfer during backup/restore using IDrive Hyper-V Backup?

IDrive uses military grade 256-bit AES encryption to encrypt all data transferred during a backup/restore operation using IDrive Hyper-V Backup feature.

How do I restore virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V Server?

To restore a virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V Server,

  1. Login to the IDrive application and click the 'Restore' tab.
  2. Locate and select the 'IDHyperVData' folder in your IDrive account.
  3. Click 'Restore Now' to restore the 'IDHyperVData' folder to the local computer.
  4. Once the 'IDHyperVData' folder has been successfully restored, click the 'Server Backup' tab.
  5. In the Hyper-V section, click 'Restore'.
  1. Browse and choose the 'IDHyperVData' folder (restored earlier from your IDrive account).
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) you want to restore to your Hyper-V server.
  3. Click 'Restore Now' to restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server.
  1. Click 'Yes', in the confirmation window to commence Hyper-V restore.

Can I restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a network mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, IDrive lets you restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a local path, including network mapped and NAS drives.

To restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server from a network mapped drive or NAS,

  1. Go to the 'Server Backup' tab of IDrive application.
  2. In the Hyper-V section, click 'Restore'.
  1. Browse and select the 'IDHyperVData' folder saved in your network mapped / NAS drive.
  2. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list, which you want to restore to your VMware server.
  3. Click 'Restore Now'.
  1. Click 'Yes', in the confirmation window.
  2. Provide network drive authentication details and click 'Authenticate'.
  1. Hyper-V restore will commence after successful authentication.

Is there a need for an additional/external storage volume for Hyper-V Virtual backup?

No. However, do ensure that the temporary location that you select while scheduling the Hyper-V Backup has sufficient disk space to hold the selected items, during the backup process.

Can I attach a VHD file from IDrive Hyper-V Backup to a different Hyper-V server?

Yes, You can attach a VHD file from IDrive Hyper-V Backup to a different Hyper-V Server.

How to restore Hyper-V virtual machine backup to different servers?

To restore Hyper-V virtual machine to different servers,

  1. Create a virtual machine in the Hyper-V Manager.
  2. Go to the 'Specify Name and Location' tab, and specify the name for the virtual machine.
  3. Go to the 'Assign Memory' tab, to assign memory.
  4. Go to the 'Connect Virtual Hard Disk' tab and select Use an existing virtual hard disk radio button.
  5. Browse and select 'Vhd/vhdx' from IDrive Backup folder.
  6. Click 'Finish'.

How do I merge the Snapshots (avhd/avhdx) to Parent Disk?

To start the merge,

  1. Identify the newest AVHD in the IDrive Backup folder.
  2. Rename the newest AVHD (AVHD4) to VHD.

    Note: Do not rename all the AVHDs at the same time. Rename only the newest Avhd first.

  3. Choose the 'Edit Disk' option from the Actions menu in the Hyper-V Management Console.
  4. Click 'Next' through the first screen and select the snapshot file on the following screen.
  5. Select Merge on the next screen and choose 'To parent virtual disk'.
  6. Click 'Finish'.

After merging, AVHD4 will be deleted automatically. Rename the second newest Avhd (AVHD3) to Vhd. and Repeats all the steps until the oldest AVHD ( AVHD1) gets merged with the parent VHD.

To upgrade your Hyper-V virtual machine,

  1. Shut down the virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager.
  2. Select 'Action'.
  3. Click 'Upgrade Configuration Version'.

Note:

  • This option will not be available for virtual machines which are already at the highest configuration version supported by your Hyper-V host.
  • .iso files are not considered for backup.
